Had a chance to hop back into our long-term 2009 Dodge Challenger this week, and it's been yet another enjoyable experience. As a born-and-bred Detroiter, I've always had a soft spot as big as a Challenger for American muscle cars, and it's been great to watch the resurgence of the modern day Pony Car wars we've chronicled in depth in the pages of Motor Trend and on MT.com.
Of the new Mustang, Camaro and Challenger, I really enjoy simply tooling around in the Challenger. Not attacking the twisties or laying down huge smoky burnouts (although it can do that too, of course), just rumbling along, notching the gears with that massive pistol grip shifter and otherwise cruising the highways and byways in and around L.A. (and yeah, there's a lot of low-speed cruisin' going on). Our attractive, B20 Blue-sprayed R/T still draws plenty of longing looks and attention.
But there's one little issue I've encountered several times as I've entered the car: its wonky exterior door handles. It happens at least once every time I drive it -- I reach for the handle to lift it, and my fingers snap away from it. There's very little area to grab, as you can see in the photo, and worse yet, it slants so there's even less overall area for the tips of your fingers to latch onto.
Yes, I know: If you owned it, you'd get used to it, but even now after driving it multiple days, it still gets me here and there. Memo to Dodge, get your door handle engineers on this, stat...
