Lotus is returning to tradition in several ways this year, first with an entry in the 2010 Formula 1 championship series, and now by reforming a partnership with famed UK engine builder Cosworth. In the 1960s, it was Cosworth's DFV engine that powered various Lotus F1 cars to victory in the 1960s and 70s.
"The ties between Lotus and Cosworth are, of course, already historical," said Lotus CEO Dany Bahar, "but our new strategic relationship is based purely on Cosworth's competencies, brand and race engine development capabilities."
Although Cosworth is providing its 2.4-liter V-8 for Lotus' revived F1 effort, this agreement tasks the firm with developing high-performance engines based upon existing Toyota engine architectures -- which are used in virtually every modern road-going Lotus.
Both Lotus and Cosworth aren't discussing the details of the arrangement, but Lotus did note the first Cossie-Toyota engine will be a high-power version of the 3.5-liter V-6, which is destined for the new Evora Cup race car.
