BMW fans, particularly those of you living in snowy climates, may have noticed there's been no mention of an xDrive all-wheel drive model of the new 5 Series yet. BMW would like you to know it hasn't forgotten -- in fact, it'll launch in October starting at $52,775.
Yes, come October there will be two new 5 Series models in your local BMW showroom, the 2011 535ix and the 2011 550ix. The former will carry the abovementioned $52,775 price tag, which includes $875 for Destination and Handling. The latter will carry a starting price of $62,875. For those keeping score, that's a $2300 premium over a two-wheel drive 535i or 550i.
In addition to the hardware, those extra 2300 clams are paying for updates to the xDrive system also seen on the all-wheel drive 7 Series models. BMW boasts that its Integrated Chassis Management System will quickly but carefully dole out power and individual wheel braking to maintain stability and neutral handling on any surface. All xDrive models also come with Hill Descent Control standard for an extra measure of safety.
Like rear-wheel drive 5 Series, the xDrive models will come standard with BMW's new eight-speed automatic transmission for improve smoothness and efficiency. BMW has not announced yet whether a manual transmission will be an option as it was with the last xDrive 5 Series, or if this will be the only transmission.
